From an alarm app to a wellness app.

In May 2023, Alarmy celebrated its 10th anniversary.
So much has happened over the years, but I've hand-picked the 10 most memorable moments to share with you—from the most joyful and surprising ones to the sad and regretful ones.

So, shall we take a look at what we've been through? 👀

1. The Birth of Alarmy! Sleep If U Can? Alarmy! ⏰

In August 2012, Alarmy was first launched under the name Sleep If U Can 😈.🎉 Back then, it only had the photo mission and was only available on Android OS. It gained fame as the "devil's alarm app that wakes you up no matter what," and soon changed its name to the Alarmy ⏰ that users are familiar with today.

2. The Rise of Malicious Copycat Apps 🤯

In 2015, a malicious copycat app appeared that ripped off Alarmy completely and launched as a paid app. Worse yet, if you actually downloaded it, it was a scam app with zero functionality, but they linked their CS channel to Alarmy, so I vividly remember suffering for months trying to respond to the complaints of countless angry people.😭

3. QR/Barcode Mission and Memory Game Mission Launched 👏

In 2017, we launched the barcode mission and memory game mission, which we had worked hard to prepare in order to provide a wider variety of missions that could reliably wake you up. In particular, the memory game received a lot of love from users who wanted to wake up their brains first rather than moving their bodies right after getting up. 🙌

4. From Waking Up Reliably to a Successful Morning ☀️

In 2019, Alarmy expanded its vision beyond "let's wake them up reliably" to "let's create a successful morning!" If our journey so far was about redefining an alarm from a simple time-telling tool to something that guarantees you wake up, this marked the beginning of our journey to become a wellness app that helps you greet a successful morning with Alarmy. 🌈

5. Launch of the Custom Sentence Typing Mission ✍️

The existing typing mission included motivational sentences and high-difficulty sentence types, but many users consistently shared that they wanted to wake up by typing sentences they set themselves. Putting users' opinions first, the Alarmy team immediately got to work! In 2020, we added the "custom sentence" type that users had been desperately wishing for to the typing mission!😘

6. Subscribing to an Alarm? Alarmy Premium Subscription Launched 💖

Anyone could use Alarmy for free and wake up reliably, but we had been operating a separate premium version of the app for people who wanted to wake up even more reliably.

When we mention Alarmy Premium to people wondering how Alarmy makes money, they sometimes get surprised and ask, "People pay to use an alarm?" but there are actually so many people who want to wake up more reliably and start their day with a refreshing morning for the price of a cup of coffee.

So in 2020, we merged the two apps into one and launched the premium subscription feature for the first time! Today, a whopping 93,000+ people are getting help waking up more reliably and powerfully, and preparing for a successful morning through their Alarmy Premium subscription.

7. A Painful Design Lesson 🤧 & Squat Mission Launched 🦵

In 2021, the Alarmy team wanted to deliver the crisp, refreshing feeling that comes to mind when users think of "morning," so we showed a brightly colored screen after the alarm was dismissed.
However,,, to users dismissing their alarms half-asleep, the bright screen didn't feel refreshing at all—it felt obnoxious!!😱 (Eye-blinding…!)
After receiving countless complaints from users and learning a painful lesson, we established a clear, conservative design standard that takes the user's state into account when dismissing an alarm.

  • Along with that, the squat mission, one of our popular premium missions, was launched! It's receiving a ton of love because it's a two-birds-with-one-stone mission where you can wake up and exercise at the same time.💘

8. The Multiple Mission Feature Users Craved is Finally Here

Alarmy, which is so loved for its reliable wake-up missions, had been receiving one consistent request since its very first launch. And that was the multiple mission feature!
For 8 whole years, so many users sent in countless tickets, desperately hoping for it, saying they could wake up even better if they combined several of Alarmy's powerful wake-up missions.🔥
And finally in 2022, the multiple mission feature was launched to reliably wake up any sleepyhead!😎

9. (Temporary) Goodbye to Android's Prevent Power Off 🥲

The Prevent Power Off feature, which had a love-hate (?) relationship with Android users over the years, sadly disappeared starting with Android OS 12 in 2022 due to technical constraints.
Since then, we've been getting constant requests to bring the feature back from users who used it well. Although it's a tough situation due to technical limitations, since users want it so strongly, the Alarmy team is hard at work trying to figure out if there's any functional way to solve it.🧐

10. From a Good Night's Sleep to a Refreshing Morning Condition

2023! Believing that a refreshing morning starts with a good night's sleep, Alarmy launched sleep sounds and sleep mode features to take care of your sleep as well. As a result, we even got featured as a sleep-related app on the App Store in 149 countries! 🤩

And as the first step toward figuring out and recommending the morning patterns that make users feel refreshed, we launched the "Morning Mood Input" feature, and soon followed up with the "Morning Analysis" feature that analyzes your mornings over the past two weeks! 🌞

How did you like Alarmy's 10-year growth story?

For the past 10 years, from its birth until now, Alarmy has tried to listen to users' opinions whenever dilemmas arose, and focused on the product so that users could greet a successful morning feeling more refreshed.

Along with the footsteps of the past 10 years of focusing on users and the product, we also compiled various data points from users utilizing Alarmy on its 10th anniversary and published the "Alarmy 10th Anniversary User Data Report."

Just like the user report we published for our 9th anniversary last year, we are still loved by countless users in so many different countries, but this time, new data on sleep and morning condition has been added!

Like this, Alarmy is evolving beyond a simple alarm app into a morning wellness solution that helps you get a good night's sleep and greet a refreshing morning.

Please look forward to Alarmy's next 10 and 20 years as we continue to grow every year! 🙌
