Deeply Understanding the Product, Fiercely Building It — iOS Engineer

Hello! Could you briefly introduce yourself?

Hi there. I'm Finn, an iOS engineer on the DARO team here at DelightRoom. It's been just over a year since I joined.

What kind of experience did you have before joining DelightRoom?

I actually started out in embedded development before pivoting to iOS. Since that switch, I've worked on a variety of apps, including eBook readers, collaboration tools, and fintech products.

What are you focusing on the most these days?

On the DARO team, I'm developing our iOS and Flutter SDKs. Lately, I've been working on implementing additional advertising-related specs, like oRTB (OpenRTB).

I'm curious what made you decide to take on a new challenge and join DelightRoom!

A former colleague of mine had recently moved here after quite a while at their previous job. That piqued my curiosity, and the more I looked into DelightRoom, the more attractive the company seemed.

I felt it would be a great fit for my personality, and I figured there would be people here who had gained a lot of experiences I hadn't yet had. I decided to join with the expectation that I could learn a ton from them. Looking back at this past year, I definitely feel like I've learned a lot.

Could you share a project that you're most proud of or that really stands out in your memory?

The "Ramadan Alarm" project, which I participated in relatively early on, is the most memorable. I worked on it during a brief stint with the Alarmy squad before joining the DARO team. None of us knew much about Islamic culture at the time, but the PO, QA, and designers all made a genuine effort to understand it. We spent a lot of time brainstorming, asking ourselves, "What kind of product would actually help them from their perspective?" I remember that process being incredibly fun and rewarding.

Please feel free to brag! What do you want to show off about our company?

DelightRoom is full of incredibly kind and capable members. Because of that, there's a real sense of psychological safety when we tackle our work. Building on that foundation, we can debate problem-solving fiercely while maintaining deep mutual respect. It's a company where you have colleagues who trust you, and where that entire process is just genuinely enjoyable.

Do you have any advice for folks who might be contemplating a new challenge?

I actually chewed on this question for quite a long time. It brought back memories of all those past moments where I promised myself I'd take on a new challenge, actually started one, or ended up postponing or giving up on it for one reason or another.

Rather than thinking of this as advice I typically give to others, I pondered it as a personal resolution I'd want to make for myself. Looking back on those challenges as time has passed, I've realized that the moments I decided to take on something new were almost always the best choices. Even if I eventually chose to postpone or give up along the way, those decisions just led to other paths, ultimately leaving me with meaningful experiences.

So, for anyone hesitating over a new challenge, I hope you won't be too afraid of the choice itself. Whatever decision you make will eventually lead to your next step, and I believe that entire journey will turn out to be time well spent for your own growth.
